She was good at compartmentalizing. Very good. Being able to put emotions away was a valuable skill. And that was the only reason that the next day and a half didn’t fall apart. In fact, Hannah thought, as she walked back out onto the street, the trip had been a successful one. Between meetings with potential art buyers and critics, and Frank’s deft touch with the artists, the show was very much a go. This could, she thought, turn out to be the art show of the year if they played their cards right.

Which was all very well and good. But whilst all this was happening, those emotions had been festering away in their little box like a tupperware full of leftovers.

Hannah glanced at her watch. She had a rare half hour of free time before Frank came out of her last artist meeting. She dismissed the idea of catching a cab and decided to walk back to the apartment instead. It would give her time to think.

Frank. Frank was the problem. Stupid, naïve, badly dressed, oh so attractive Frank. And now the feelings had been spoken aloud, or at least summoned up from the ether, she was more and more aware of them.

She stepped over the curb and crossed the street. At first, it had been easy to dismiss everything as purely physical. But that wasn’t what this was. It had become obvious to her as soon as she’d let Frank into her apartment, as soon as she’d started to unconsciously lower the walls that she so closely guarded herself with. She wasn’t in lust with Frank. There was a whole lot more to it than that.

But she was damned if she knew why. Given a line up of all the women in the world, Frank should have been her last choice. There was no way in hell that anything could work. Actually, she didn’t want anything to work. How could she fit Frank into her life? Her real life, not this little extended vacation she was having in Oakview?

She couldn’t. And that’s why all these feelings, all these emotions, needed to be kept safely locked away. Once she was gone, once she was out of Oakview, the gallery and house sold, then things would be different. She wouldn’t have to see Frank every day, and the feelings would fade away. Hopefully.

The end of the block was coming up. She slowed a little, preparing to wait for the walk light. But why Frank?

She was attractive, certainly. Especially when she dressed properly and did her hair. She was... kind. Sensitive. Not qualities Hannah generally looked for in a woman, but she found she liked them nevertheless. She was smart, far better educated about art than Hannah herself was. She was funny. Sitting with her never seemed to be an imposition, whether they were working silently or talking.

There was the other stuff though. She wanted a family. She was a small town girl, tied to her small town. She was a co-worker.
